2011 DPTM TOURNEY

SUMMARY, RULES, PROCESS, STRATEGY AND JUDGING, TIMETABLE, AWARDS, and FAQS

SUMMARY

The tournament will be held in five stages, with 32 entrants facing off at Stage 1 and the winners progressing onto the next stages, until only one vidder remains at the Stage 5 final.

The format is similar to the Friendly Neighbourhood Vidding Awards summer tournament, but there are some significant differences regarding Stage 1 and seeding. Please read our rules even if you are familiar with the FNVA format. If you have any questions after reading the rules, feel free to email us or tag the tagboard.

RULES

The tournament is not restricted to our fandom lists – all source material is welcome.

Vidders may submit any vid of their own, regardless of whether it has been submitted to DPTM before.

We must be able to download the vid. All temporary and permanent hosts are accepted as long as the vid remains available during the judging process. There is no limit on file size.

Violence, profanity, and sexual content are allowed, but please include a warning in your description if they are extreme.

Please tag us on the tagboard after submitting a vid to ensure we have received your entry. Emails and submission forms are known to go wonky on occasion. We can’t let you know that your entry didn’t come through if we don’t know you’ve submitted one.

PROCESS

The tournament process is modelled on the soccer World Cup, with non-seeded round-robin "pools" in Stage 1. All other stages will be head-to-head knockout rounds.

Stage 1

We will split the 32 entrants into 8 pools of 4. The pool draws will be completely random.

Every entrant will submit a different vid against everybody else in their pool. This means every entrant will need to submit 3 vids in Stage 1 for a total of 6 matches in every pool. (Make sure you have an additional vid in mind for Stage 1 in case there is a tie in your pool.)

All 3 of your vids must be submitted at the same time, and you must specify which of your vids will face off against which opponent. (Entrants in each pool will be revealed when vid submissions are opened so that you will know who your opponents are prior to submitting.)

After all six matches are judged, the two entrants with the most number of wins within their pool will progress to the next round.

Example: this is an example pool showing all matches and outcomes within the pool. The pool has 4 entrants: Adam, Beatrice, Cindy and David.

Adam and Cindy had the most number of wins within their pool so they will progress to Stage 2.

In the event of a tie, there will be a tie-breaker round to determine who progresses to Stage 2, or to determine the pool winner and the runner-up. It is important to have a pool winner and a runner-up for the purpose of determining your Stage 2 position – see below.

Stages 2 – 5

Stages 2 – 5 are head-to-head knockout rounds where you submit one vid against your opponent, and the winner will progress onto the next stage. The following chart shows how these stages will progress.

Where:
A1 = Pool A winner, A2 = Pool A runner up
B1 = Pool B winner, B2 = Pool B runner up, and so on through to Pool H.

Using the above example, if Adam and Cindy came from Pool A, then Adam will enter the next match in the A1 slot, and Cindy will be in the A2 slot. This ensures that entrants from the same pool will not face off against each other again unless they meet in the final.

STRATEGY AND JUDGING

The tournament format rewards entrants who have a strong vid catalogue, and those who take the time to research their opponent and form a good entry strategy.

Vid entries in each stage will not be revealed until all videos have been submitted and the stage is ready to be judged. Therefore we recommend that you check out your opponent's vid catalogue to get a good understanding of what you are up against.

You must enter a different vid for each match. This means that you may need to enter as many as 8 vids (assuming you reach the final stage and there is a tie-breaker situation in Stage 1). If you plan to go far in the tournament, you need to think about saving your best vids for later stages, while at the same time making sure you are not under-estimating your early stage opponents. Remember, Stage 1 is not seeded so you may be up against some very tough opponents straight off – it's all down to the luck of the draw for the pools.

All 4 of DPTM's judges (wolfpup, brightette, Aruna7 and obsessive24) will be judging. For earlier stages, judging will be done by one or two judges. For later stages, judging will be collaborative between at least 3 judges. We will provide more detail on judge assignments once the 32 entrants and Stage 1 pools are determined.

We will be using our standard judging criteria for the tournament. Judges' decisions are final. Please do not complain about the pool you end up in or the outcome of each stage.

TIMETABLE

There are a lot of matches to judge, but we will try to move the tournament along as quickly as possible, with only a few days for each submission period. It's important for you to take note of deadlines because you will forfeit your match if you don't submit on time.

This is our projected timeline. It is subject to change if unexpected circumstances arise.

AWARDS

Personalized awards will be granted to everyone who advances past the first stage of the tournament. You will receive one award marking the highest stage you reached.

FAQS

How do I enter?

Entering the tournament is simple. To grab one of the 32 positions, send an email to wolfpup@kc.rr.com with “Tourney Entrant – ‘Your Vidding Name’” in the subject line, along with a link to your website/vid catalogue in the body of the email. You will be contacted within 24 hours to confirm whether or not you have claimed a position. If you do not receive an email within 24 hours, you will need to send another email or tag the tagboard to let us know you are trying to enter. (We will not accept entrants via the tagboard unless you are having a problem with email and you are granted permission to enter in that format.)

What if more than 32 people enter?

There are only 32 slots, and sign-ups are on a first-come first-served basis. We anticipate the slots will fill up fast, so get in early if you want to participate.

What if someone doesn't submit a working link on time?

You will be given a few days to submit your entry for each stage. If you do not submit within that time frame you will automatically forfeit your match. Please tag us after you submit to make sure we got your vid entry.

What if I’m going to be out of town during a time when a vid needs to be submitted?

If you know you are going to be out of town and you won’t be able to enter a vid if you happen to progress to the next stage, contact us before you leave. We will accept your potential vid entry early in case you move forward.

Stage 1 seems biased because you might randomly end up in a really easy or really difficult pool.

That's all part of the fun of a randomly drawn round robin stage! Remember, you get three matches in Stage 1 so it's up to you to work out the best strategy to advance to Stage 2.

Stage 2 seems biased as you are facing off first seeds against second seeds.

As Stage 1 is not seeded at all, this is a standard tournament format to ensure that the strongest contenders don't all crash and burn against each other in earlier stages. It may seem a little biased, but at this level there is plenty of room to pull off an upset with a good entry strategy.

Again, if you have any questions, please send an email or tag us on the tagboard and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
